Start with a conversation
After a sports story, ask your young reader which moment they would like to bring to life. It might be a friendly catch, a goal celebration or a moment when someone helped a teammate. Let their choice shape what happens next.
Make room for imagination
Give a ball a name and a dream. Where has it been? Who are its friends? Take turns adding one sentence to its adventure. You can play this game indoors, outdoors or on the way home from the library.
Keep the game simple
Find a clear space, choose a soft ball and adapt the activity to the children taking part. Roll it between partners, try an easy pass or invent a celebration. The aim is a shared experience, so let everyone help decide the rules.
Come back to the book
At the end, ask: “Did anything in our game remind you of the story?” A small connection between a character’s adventure and a child’s own experience can be the start of another good conversation—and another reading session.
