Notice the effort
A kind word does not have to wait for a goal or a home run. “You kept trying” and “Thanks for passing to me” celebrate the things every player can contribute. Invite children to notice one helpful thing a teammate did.
Make space for everyone
Before the next game, ask the group how everyone can have a turn. Children often have thoughtful ideas about sharing roles, adjusting a challenge or helping someone who is learning. Listen to their suggestions and try one together.
Practise a fresh start
A missed catch or an unlucky shot is a chance to practise encouragement. Ask children what they would like to hear after a mistake, then try using those words in the next game. Simple phrases can make it easier to take another turn.
Spot teamwork in a story
While reading, pause when a character gives or receives help. Ask what changed because someone chose to be a friend. Stories give families a relaxed way to talk about the kind of teammates they want to be.
